Astor Place / Patron

Astor Place

Astor place is a neighborhood in downtown Manhattan that runs North from 4th street to 8th street and East from Broadway to Third Avenue. It was named after John Jacob Astor, at one time the richest person in United States. In mid 1800s, Astor place became home to some of the wealthiest New Yorkers, before manufacturing firms moved in during 1900s. The area gradually felt into disrepair until it went through revitalization in the late 1960s. Today, it is a young and vibrant community with home to many art galleries, theaters, colleges and tech companies.

Patron is a sans-serif typeface designed by Timo Gaessner and released through Milieu Grotesque in 2014. According to Milieu Grotesque, Patron is influenced by two dissimilar type designers, Günther Gerhard Lange and Roger Excoffon. Patron unites their contradictory approaches to create an expressive, yet versatile grotesk. As a result, Patron is characterized by a generous x-height, flared stroke endings and an unconventional shift in balance, inspired by Excoffon and a rigorously precise, modern interpretation for which Lange was most famous.
